By Catherine de Károlyi
Europe, 1940. Very good. Minor toning, wear, short tears.. From the collection of a children's book editor active in the 1940s to 50s, "JINX" is a unique, unpublished children's book manuscript by Catherine de Károlyi (1919-2006), a fashion designer best known for designing the first women's ready to wear collection for Hermès in the late 1960s. She began her career as a model in Paris. "JINX" is a 48 page corrected typescript with 6 original hand-painted illustrations done by the author herself, laid in a homemade green paper binder with a piece of tan burlap affixed to the front. A watercolor illustration by her is affixed to the cover. Title page reads story and illustrations by Countess Catherine Karolyi; adaptation into English by Elizabeth Burrows Archer. On the next page is the following note: “As Countess Karolyi was doing the illustrations in Paris while I was rewriting the story in Zurich there are several discrepancies between the illustrations and the text at the moment." Few sample illustrations. The story of a miniature boy, no bigger at the age of 7 than a milk bottle. He is given the nickname Jinx because of his bad luck. Over 30 pages of the text have corrections in pencil. Measures approx. 11.75" by 9
