Having served with distinction against Napoleon's forces at Seringpatam in 1798, Baird was later instructed to lead an expedition to the Red Sea from India in tandem with forces coming from the Mediterranean. The success of the attack saw the removal of the French from Egypt and Baird became a popular hero for his part in it.
