[Ephemera]: Original Pen & Ink and Watercolor Menu from France, 1882

[France], 1882. Very Good. A satirical pen & ink and watercolor drawing with hand-lettering on a laid paper sheet (9.75” x 9.75”). Scattered modest foxing and light stains, very good. The drawing features a rather unsavory chef presenting a “Carte du Menu 9 Avril 1882” held aloft in his teeth. Among the main courses: “Rotis,” “Legumes,” and “Poisson,” one can order an Aztec buttered whale (“Baleine au beurre genre Aztec”), or roasted crocodile leg (“Gigot de Crocodile”). Also on offer are wines (“Bordeaux sans blangue”), desserts (“Tarte aux Oignon cuite au vent”), and several other queer cuisines.
