Hawaii, 1930. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". String-tied black leather over stiff paper boards with "Places and Faces" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 124 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 3.5" x 6" with some captions. Near fine album with some rubbing and edgewear with near fine photographs.

A photo album kept by a man on a trip to Hawaii circa the 1930s. The album opens with a ship departing for the island with someone breaking champagne against the ship and the travelers waving from on board. This is followed by photos from a car race and images of a man in a straw hat posed around ruins and palm trees. Many of the photos show well composed images of the tropical scenery from palm trees to water falls; a captioned photo shows Diamond Head. It appears that the compiler was either a sailor or part of the Coast Guard as a number of the photos show sailors and images of boats off the coast of the island. A few photos show action shots of men diving off the side of a ship, another photo shows a uniformed sailors casually leaning on the side of a ship with a cigarette. Some of the later photos show men working on a docked ship and posed next to propellers. Ship loading photos are also seen here including one of a steer being hoisted onto a ship. A photo towards the end of the album shows tanned surfers on their boards.

A nice collection of Hawaii photography with an emphasis on maritime activities.
