Stephen J. Field (1866-1899) was a Supreme Court Justice, and had one of the longest tenures in the court's history. In 1849 he headed for California attracted by the "gold rush" out west. He established a law practice out there, and was eventually elected to the California State Assembly; in 1858 he became Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court.
