8vo, modern three quarter calf with boards, gilt spine, with morocco labels lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, 248 pp. Light wear to binding, small ownership stamp at top of front endpaper, toning and scattered foxing; otherwise very good. Stephen J. Field (1866-1899) was a Supreme Court Justice, and had one of the longest tenures in the court's history. In 1849 he headed for California attracted by the "gold rush" out west. He established a law practice out there, and was eventually elected to the California State Assembly; in 1858 he became Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court.
