Inscribed and signed by the author on title page: "For Dr. Alfred Vagts with thanks for comments on several drafts, for keeping me abreast of East German scholarship, but above all for inspiration and encouragement--from one who had already been there, that Delbrück was a worthwhile topic for work of this kind. / Arden Bucholz / 3.5.85." Vagts, the German-American military historian and poet, was the son-in-law of Charles A. Beard.
