Manuscript Tennessee Legal Document Over Disputed Slave Ownership.
- Tennessee: , December 5, 1860.
Folio letter sheet, paper has bluish color, one page of text, signed, and docketing note on verso. Old creases, a couple of chips along edges, not affecting text, one inch tear along crease, still not affecting text, normal aging; about very good. This is a manuscript document concerning the ownership of a young male slave just before the start of the Civil War. The document is signed by Sion W. Boon as Circuit Court Clerk, and W.D. Maxey on behalf of 12 plaintiffs of the Maxey family. The affidavit indicates that James S. Hill stole slave named Jim "of copper colour" worth about $1500. A previous owner of the document indicated that Boon and Maxey would serve in the Confederate Tennessee Infantry Regiments, and would survive the war. Hill also served, but in the Cavalry, and would also survive the war. The fate of young Jim is unknown.
