New York City: Joel Horton Ross, 1856. Ten (10) single page two-side letters written from Joel Horton Ross to his mother in New Salem, Franklin Co., Mass. Ross was an 1844 graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He invented an abdominal supporter for "female weakness" and made a living in his early career cupping and leeching for so "they are making a comfortable living". The contents include information and concern on family matters, discussions of his deep faith, the fact that he published a book. What I saw in New-York; or, A bird's eye view of city life and how he was disillusioned by New York life. He moves about a bit but returns to NYC and discussing his misgivings re "Gold Fever". A glimpse at daily living through the eyes of a modestly successful New Yorker in the 1840s and 50s. The correspondence has been transcribe in full by a previous owner.
