Binghamton, NY, 1950s-1970s. Hardcover. White embossed loose-leaf binder. Very good. 22 X 15 cm. A personal culinary archive compiled by a Binghamton homemaker using a 1936 loose-leaf binder produced by the Blackwell Wielandy Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The binder contains fifty sheets for handwritten or pasted recipes, with ten special index pages designed for classification and organization. Recipes are recorded and clipped primarily from the Binghamton Press, beginning in the 1950s. Included is a charming illustrated 1950s guide on washing and ironing a mans shirt.
The collection reflects a sociable and skilled home cook: the beverage section features numerous punch recipes meant to serve gatherings of up to eighty, while the baking section abounds with cookies, brownies, and cakes. By the 1970s, the compilers interests shift toward health and diet, with materials from the local Weight Watchers program (handbook included), Barbara Gibbons The Slim Gourmet (Binghamton), Womans Day Trimming the Calories from Favorite Recipes, and Redbooks The Famous Womans Diet. An evocative window into American domestic life from the 1950s through the 1970s.
