Canton, Ohio: The Ladies of the Maccabees of the World - CANTON HIVE No. 53, c. 1907. Staplebound. Gray wraps. Good. 48 pages. 21.5 x 14.5 cm. A delightful period cookbook filled with recipes and local advertisements. Of particular interest is the final chapter - A FEW SUGGESTIONS FOR CHURCH SUPPERS. Here we find recipes for making Tamales in huge quantities, Fish Chowder for 200, Chop Suey, Egg Foo Tong, and Mushrooms a La Japan for a Crowd. The Ladies of the Maccabees (L.O.T.M.) was the first fraternal benefit society operated exclusively by women. Operating as an insurance benefit society - members were assessed (10 cents) to go into a pot to provide widows with death benefits and eventually sick benefits. The organization was originally formed in Michigan but grew to other "hives" - this hive being the Canton (Ohio) Hive No. 53. Interior clean. Wraps lightly soiled and holding.
